The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, famous for the dense population of one-horn rhinos, reopened to travelers on Saturday after remaining closed during the monsoon.

After remaining closed during the monsoons, the very famous Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam has finally reopened its gates to tourists. The sanctuary is known for being home to the exotic Indian one-horned rhino population. The doors of the park were thrown open in the presence of State Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and Jagiroad MLA Pijush Hazarika.

Pobitora is a dream destination of ardent wildlife lovers and nature enthusiasts. The park is ready withinside the Morigaon district, some 48 km from Guwahati in Assam. One can reach here in an hour’s drive via street passing by the River Brahmaputra. The area was declared a reserved forest in 1971 and a wildlife sanctuary in 1987.

Spread over 38. eight sq km, the park is a natural habitat of the Great Indian one-horned rhinoceros. Currently, there are around ninety-three rhinos within the park living in a 16 sq km habitat. Besides, Pobitora is also domestic to nearly 2000 migratory birds, an extensive range of reptiles, and wild animals, including leopards, wild boars, elephants, barking deer, and wild buffaloes, amongst others. In the past six years, the sanctuary has seen a ten percent increase in the rhino population.

Air: The nearest airport to the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport or Guwahati Airport. The distance between the 2 destinations is 70 km, which takes several hours. Taxis and personal automobiles are difficult to have from the airport outdoors.

Rail: Guwahati railway station is the closest railhead to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, located a few forty-five km from the park.

Road: Guwahati is without difficulty on hand from all of the elements of Assam. One can attain the park from any approach of street transport.

Pobitora would also be attractive to site visitors as over 600 migratory Amur Falcons have arrived here this year after more than a decade, with only a handful being spotted during the intervening years, environmental NGOs said.

The Amur Falcons are small and slender birds that annually migrate over 22,000 km in flocks from their breeding areas in Eastern Siberia, Northern China, Mongolia, Manchuria, and North Korea from late August to September.

The 38-sq km sanctuary, about forty-six km from Guwahati, is the 0.33 wildlife habitat opened to visitors after Kaziranga reopened on Friday and Manas on October 27 last.
