Chapora Fort

Chapora Fort, situated 10 km from Mapusa, is among the famous forts in Goa. Constructed by the Portuguese in 1717, Chapora Fort has a history linked to it. Also called 'Dil Chahta Hai Fort', it jumped to fame through the 2001 Bollywood blockbuster. A fascinating escape, it offers stunning views of the sea as well as the Chapora River.

The fortifications engulfing the present location of Chapora Fort existed before the Portuguese landed in Goa. It was built by Muslim king Adil Shah and was referred to as Shahpura. The fort was reconstructed by the Portuguese who called it Chapora, after the Chapora River flowing alongside it. The charm of the fort is the view of the Vagator beach that overlooks the Arabian Sea, at sunset. However, reaching the top of the ruined fort needs a steep climb.

Chapora Fort was in the hands of various rulers over a period of time, from the Portuguese to the Marathas and the ruins depict a story. You can look into the entry points of the tunnels constructed by the Portuguese for emergency escape.

Before the coming of the Portuguese to Goa, the spot of location of Chapora Fort was the site of another fort. The Adil Shah rulers of Bijapur had constructed a fort in the region, and the Portuguese built the existing structure in 1717 for defending their territories from the invasion of the Marathas. Underground channels were constructed inside the fort as escape routes in dire emergencies.

The Portuguese governed Chapora Fort for more than 150 years. However, the Marathas under the rule of Sambhaji succeeded in conquering the fort twice. The Portuguese succeeded in gaining control over the fort, and in 1892, the fort was abandoned since the colony had expanded further north.
